Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) is a major metropolitan area comprised of 12 counties in Texas and is the largest metropolitan area in the Southern US. The rate of adult obesity is 29%, the 13th -highest rated city in the U.S., and trending suggests this number will continue to increase. Lack of insurance is also a major concern for those in DFW, with 33% of the population living without insurance, including over 6 million adults and 1 million children.
Given the high rate of obesity, combined with a lack of health insurance, many medical professionals in Dallas are required to be certified in CPR, First Aid and BLS (Basic Life Support). These are critical qualifications for EMTs, RNs and other medical professionals in order to keep up with the increasingly high demand for health services in the area. "CPR Select" provides flexible, quality online training programs for medical professionals wishing to certify or recertify.
Baylor University Medical Center is Dallas' top hospital. As part of the Baylor Healthcare System, this healthcare conglomerate consists of 27 medical centers and 174 clinics in the DFW area and employs more than 19,000 people. Founded in 1903, Baylor has more than 900-beds combined, and specializes in urology, orthopedics, gynecology, nephrology and gastroenterology. As a teaching hospital dedicated to research, Baylor Healthcare is "serving all people through exemplary healthcare." Other notable DFW hospitals include Children's Medical Center of Dallas and Methodist Medical Center.
Dallas-Fort Worth, also called "The Metroplex," has a population of over 6.5 million in 9,286 square miles. Incorporated in 1856, DFW is the 16th most populous city in the U.S. Originally inhabited by the Caddo people, Dallas is completely landlocked. Established as an Army outpost in 1849, the original fort was flooded and reconstructed where the courthouse stands today. The weather in Dallas consists of very hot summers with numerous thunderstorms and tornadoes, and mild winters. Other major cities close to Dallas include Plano, Irving and Arlington.
The city's economy is largely comprised of commerce, telecommunications, transportation and logistics, energy, healthcare and medical research and computer technology. As the fifth-largest media market, the economy also depends on media, including newspapers, magazines and television, as well as tourism.
The Dallas area has been made famous for a variety of reasons. Cuisine is a big part of the Dallas culture, with Barbeque, Tex-Mex, Mexican food and Margaritas being Dallas staples. The Annual Greek Food Festival also takes place in Dallas every year. With a dedication to the arts, visitors have many venues to choose from, including the Dallas Museum of Art, AT&T Dallas Center for Performing Arts and the Nasher Sculpture Center. Notable sports events include the Cotton Bowl and sports teams including the Dallas Cowboys, Mavericks, Rangers and Stars.
