According to www.americashealthrankings.org, New Jersey was ranked 8th in overall health in 2012 and has increased significantly from 17th in 2011. The life expectancy is 79.66 years, which is slightly longer than the national average of 78.7 years.
When it comes to healthcare spending, New Jersey is ranked 32nd, spending approximately $65 per person. New Jersey is 33rd in insurance. The number of people living without insurance is 15.5% and has remained relatively stable over the last decade. The availability of primary care physicians is one of the highest-ranked in the nation in 9th place, with approximately 137.7 PCPs per 100,000 residents, which is appreciably higher than the national average of 121.
As of 2010 approximately 9.1% of adults in New Jersey are living below poverty level. The percentage of children living in poverty is 17.4%, ranking New Jersey 17th in the country in this category. Over the past decade, the rate of adults living in poverty has increased less than 1% while the rate of children has increased drastically by over 5% in the past year alone.
Despite a moderately high prevalence for sedentary lifestyle, New Jersey is one of the highest-ranked states in the nation, coming in 4th, with 23.7% of adults considered obese. This number has increased nearly 4% since 2002. With a ranking of 12, New Jersey also has a relatively low percentage of obesity among children with 10.9% of the adolescent population considered obese. Taking into account the percentage of obese individuals, it is no surprise that 8.8% of adults in New Jersey are living with diabetes, ranking it 16th in the country. This number has been increasing in the last five years, up from 7.5% in 2007. The incidence of stroke is approximately 2.3%, which is just slightly higher than the national average of 2.1%.
With only 16.8% of the population smoking, New Jersey has the 3rd lowest ranking in the country. Roughly 18.2% of the population participates in binge drinking, giving New Jersey a ranking of 25th, which although not extremely high, indicates a more than 4% increase since 2011 alone.
With the strengths being low prevalence for smoking and obesity and a high availability of PCPs, New Jersey is still struggling with a high prevalence for sedentary lifestyle and lack of insurance.
