Health Information for Medical Professionals in Arizona

According to health ranking website www.americanhealthrankings.com, Arizona was ranked as 25th in 2012, an increase of two ranks over the past year. The state ranks 11th in terms of obesity, with 1.2 million residents – 24.7% of the entire population - suffering from obesity. The rates of obesity have been found to be higher in Hispanics (31 percent) as compared to non-Hispanics (at 24 percent). This is primarily due to the prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle, with 1.2 million adults leading an inactive live.

The state of Arizona faces very high rates of binge drinking, and it is expected that this rate will increase with time. Currently the binge drinking rate stands at 18 percent, and Arizona ranks among the top twenty five states in terms of health issues linked to binge drinking. The problem of binge drinking seems to be more prevalent in men than in women.

The state of Arizona also ranks poorly in terms of other health factors, including rates of smoking and diabetes. Arizona ranks 14th out of 50 in terms of smoking and 26th out of 50 in terms of diabetes prevalence rates, following a ranking system in which a higher rank indicates a lower prevalence. The crude rates of preventable hospitalizations, the chief cause of which is smoking, has fallen from 61.5 to 52.9, indicating better awareness regarding the dangers of smoking, as well as active efforts to cut down. The initial rates were considered to be higher as compared to the rest of the country, but the subsequent decline has also been the largest. Similarly, rates of cardiovascular diseases dropped from 218.3 out of 100,000 to 210.3 out of 100,000, while rates of cancer dropped from 175.4 out of 100,000 to 157.6 out of 100,000. This is indicative of a marked increase in public health spending.

Half a million adults in the state suffer from diabetes. While this is among the highest rates in the country, as dietary habits continue to decline, it is expected that this rate will increase in the near future.

In the past year the percentage of children in poverty decreased from 27.3 percent of persons under age 18 to 24.7 percent.

The strong points of the state are low rates of preventable hospitalizations and cancer and cardiovascular disease related deaths. The challenges however are the high rates of obesity, and limited availability of primary care physicians.
