According to health ranking website www.americanhealthrankings.com, Colorado ranks among the healthiest states in the United States. In 2012, the state ranked 11th in the entire country, an increase from 14th place in 2011. The main problem areas in the state are a high prevalence of binge drinking and a low rate of immunization coverage. This, however, is offset by the low rates of obesity and diabetes and a low prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle. The rates of air pollution and preventable hospitalization are also among the lowest in the country.
Colorado has the lowest obesity and diabetes rates in the entire country, ranking 1st in both departments. Only 20.7 percent of the population (805,000 adults) has been found to be obese, the lowest in the country, with approximately the same proportion living an inactive lifestyle. The corresponding rank for smoking is a meager 10th, with only 24 percent of the population found to be active smokers. Smoking appears to be more of a problem in the Hispanic population, with 27.7 percent rate of prevalence, as opposed to only 14 percent in the Caucasian population. In contrast, diabetes mainly occurs in the African-American population, with 28 percent rate of prevalence, as opposed to only 18 percent in the Caucasian population.
Surprisingly however, the state of Colorado faces very high rates of binge drinking, with a rank of 37th in the entire country, with a 20.1 rate of prevalence. It is however expected that this rate will decline or remain stable with time. The problem of binge drinking seems to be more prevalent in men than in women.
The crude rates of preventable hospitalizations, the chief cause of which is smoking, has fallen from decreased from 57.2 to 40.1, indicating better awareness regarding the dangers of smoking, as well as active efforts to cut down.
CPR, First Aid and BLS (Basic Life Support) is a critical qualification for EMTs, RNs and other medical professionals in Colorado. CPR Select provides online classes and certification programs for medical professionals who wish to become certified.
