According to www.americashealthrankings.org, Iowa was ranked 20th in overall health in 2012. The life expectancy is 79.68 years, which is slightly longer than the national average of 78.7 years.

When it comes to healthcare spending, Iowa is ranked 40th. It is also ranked 10th and is one of the highest-ranked states in the nation for insurance. The number of people living without insurance is 11.1%, marking an increase of only about 2% in the past decade. The availability of primary care physicians is ranked one of the poorest in the nation, at 46th, with only approximately 84.3 PCPs per 100,000 residents, which is appreciably lower than the national average of 121.

Approximately 11.6% of adults in Iowa are living below poverty level as of 2010. The percentage of children living in poverty is one of the lowest, at 3.1%, ranking Iowa 6th in the country in this category.
