Tampa is located in western Florida on the Tampa Bay. This racially and ethnically diverse city faces some unfortunate health disparities. Obesity rates in Tampa are particularly high with an adult obesity rate of 26.3% and 22.1% of the population admit to receiving no physical activity at all. Tampa also has a high prevalence of diabetes, attributing to over 20 per 100,000 deaths. Poverty is also another concern for Tampa residents, with 16.4% of the population living below the poverty line. Of that percentage, 31% are under 18 and 13.6% are over 65.
Given the high rate of obesity, diabetes-related deaths, and a moderate rate of poverty, it is vital for medical professionals in Tampa to be certified in CPR, First Aid and BLS (Basic Life Support). These are critical qualifications for EMTs, RNs and other medical personnel in order to serve a diverse population with multiple health problems and lack of access to care. You can certify, or recertify, with "CPR Select's" flexible, quality online training programs for Tampa medical professionals.

The Tampa metropolitan area is the 2nd largest metro area in Florida and the 4th largest in the southeastern United States. The metro area has a population of over 4 million people in 2,554 square miles. The climate is humid subtropical and consists of hot summers and mild winters. The area has a high prevalence of tropical storms and severe thunderstorms and is the "lightening capital of the world," receiving the most lightning strikes in the nation.
Incorporated in 1887, Tampa was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga and Pohoy Indians. In 1824, the U.S. Army established Fort Brooke, an army outpost. The first residents in the Tampa area were civilians that settled near the fort, looking for protection from the Seminole Indians. The population in Tampa grew slowly over the years. In the 1880s the railroad links, combined with the discovery of phosphate and the successful cigar industry brought about a population and economic boom. The onset of World War II further increased the population, leading to a record-breaking population increase.
