According to health ranking website www.americanhealthrankings.com, Lousiana has a very low ranking in terms of health statistics. It was ranked the bottom of the pile in 2011 and has only jumped one rank this year. The state ranks 49th in terms of obesity, with over 1.2 million adults - 33 percent of the population 0 suffering from the problem. In Lousiana, obesity is more prevalent among non-Hispanic blacks at 42.5 percent than non-Hispanic whites at 31.8 percent. In Louisiana, obesity is more prevalent among non-Hispanic blacks at 41.6 percent than non-Hispanic whites at 29.3 percent and Hispanics at 28.9 percent; and sedentary lifestyle is more prevalent among non-Hispanic blacks at 35.9 percent than non-Hispanic whites at 26.4 percent and Hispanics at 25.1 percent.
The major challenges for the state are a high prevalence of sedentary lifestyle, obesity &diabetes, high percentage of children in poverty, high infant mortality rate and high prevalence of low birth weight, high rate of preventable hospitalizations, high rate of uninsured population as well as increases in the number of children living in poverty.
The state has the 45th ranking in the United States in terms of smoking. Surprisingly, however, the rate of binge drinking is low and Lousiana ranks 9th in terms of health issues linked to binge drinking. The problem of binge drinking seems to be more prevalent in men than in women.
The state of Lousiana also ranks poorly in terms of other health factors, including prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle and diabetes. Lousiana ranks 49th out of 50 in terms of diabetes prevalence rates, following a ranking system in which a higher rank indicates a lower prevalence. The crude rates of preventable hospitalizations, the chief cause of which is smoking, has fallen from 115.3 to 110,2, indicating better awareness regarding the dangers of smoking, as well as increasing amounts of public health spending. These still remain the highest rates in the country.
The strong points of the state are low incidence of binge drinking, an increase in the immunization coverage, low violent crime rate and a low rate of uninsured population as well as a low occupational fatalities rate.
CPR, First Aid and BLS (Basic Life Support) is a critical qualification for EMTs, RNs and other medical professionals in Lousiana. CPR Select provides online classes and certification programs for medical professionals who wish to become certified.
