According to health ranking website www.americanhealthrankings.com, Alabama just about makes the bottom five states in terms of health rankings. The state ranked 45th in terms of health in 2012, the only positive sign being that it had shown an improvement from the 48th rank in 2011.
The main problem areas in the state are a high prevalence of smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes and a low birth weight and high infant mortality rate.
With over 430,000 registered sufferers of diabetes, the state ranks 46th in this area. The state also ranks 47th in obesity, with 1.2 million adults suffering from the disease, with approximately the same number living an inactive lifestyle. The corresponding rank for smoking is 41st, with more than 943,000 active adult smokers - over 24 percent of the population. Smoking appears to be more of a problem in the African-American population, with 43.1 percent of the African-American population suffering from obesity, followed by Hispanics at 31.1 percent and Caucasians at 28 percent. In contrast, smoking is more prevalent in Hispanics at 32 percent, followed by Caucasians at 22 percent, and African-Americans at 21.8 percent.
Surprisingly however, the state of Alabama faces very low rates of binge drinking, ranking in at 4th, with 13.7 percent of the population suffering from this problem. It is however expected that this rate will decline or remain stable with time. The problem of binge drinking seems to be more prevalent in men than in women.
The crude rates of preventable hospitalizations, the chief cause of which is smoking, has fallen from decreased from 94.8 to 80.1, indicating better awareness regarding the dangers of smoking, as well as active efforts to cut down.
The positive factors for the state of Alabama are the low prevalence of binge drinking, high per capita public health spending and high rates of immunization.
