According to www.americashealthrankings.org, California was ranked 22nd in overall health in 2012. The state has remained relatively stable in overall health rankings in the past decade. The life expectancy is 80.37 years (the third highest in the U.S.), which is slightly longer than the national average of 78.7 years.
When it comes to healthcare spending, California is ranked 12th and is among the highest in per capita public health funding. In 2010, California spent an astonishing $2.6 trillion in health care costs, which averages out to over $8,000 per person. Despite healthcare spending, the percentage of people who were uninsured in 2012 was an unacceptable 19.6%. Ranked 44th in the country, the number of people living without insurance has remained more or less stable over the past five years. The availability of primary care physicians in California is ranked 22nd, averaging out to approximately 118 PCPs per 100,000 residents, which is on par with the national average of 121.
There are approximately 4.9 million Californians (13.7% of the population) currently living in poverty, with only a 0.5% decrease in the last decade. As for children living in poverty, California was ranked 40th in the country in 2012 with nearly 24% of all children living below poverty level. Trending suggests poverty in California is worsening given that it has increased by more than 6% in the past 5 years.
Although California is ranked 5th in obesity, one of the lowest in the country, 23.8% of adults (approximately 6.7 million people) are still considered obese. The state is also ranked 17thoverall for adults who are living with diabetes. Considering the population, data suggests that the low prevalence of obesity and diabetes among adults is due to a low occurrence of a sedentary lifestyle and a high frequency of physical activity. California also has the fourth lowest prevalence for stroke in the country, with only 2.2% of the population having had a stroke (compared to a national average of 2.1%)
With only 13.7% of the state "lighting up," California has an extremely low prevalence of smoking and is ranked 2nd. In contrast, however, 18.6% of the population partakes in binge drinking, giving California an overall ranking of 28th.
With the strengths being low prevalence for smoking and binge drinking, as well as a significant decrease in cardiovascular related deaths over the past decade, California is still struggling with a high prevalence for infectious disease and air pollution.
