According to health ranking website www.americanhealthrankings.com, Hawaii ranked among the healthiest states in the country. It was the second healthiest state in the country in 2012, having improved one rank from the previous. The state ranks 2nd in obesity, but despite having among the lowest rates of obesity in the country, 234,000 adults still suffer from the problem. There is also a very low prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle, ranking 6th in the US with only 21.3 percent of the population living an active lifestyle.
In Hawaii, smoking is more prevalent among non-Hispanic Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders at 23.1 percent than non-Hispanic whites at 14.1 percent; and obesity is more prevalent among non-Hispanic Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders at 58.5 percent than non-Hispanic whites at 19.4 percent and Hispanics at 25.7 percent.
The major challenges for the state are a high prevalence of binge drinking, high rates of air pollution, high rates of infant mortality, increases in the number of children living in poverty and a low rate of coverage through immunization, as well as low high school graduation rate and a high prevalence of low birth weight.
Currently the binge drinking rate stands at 21.3 percent, and Hawaii ranks 43rd in terms of health issues linked to binge drinking. The problem of binge drinking seems to be more prevalent in men than in women.
The state of Hawaii also ranks highly in terms of other health factors, including rates of smoking and diabetes. Hawaii ranks 11th out of 50 in terms of diabetes and 3rd in terms of smoking prevalence rates, following a ranking system in which a higher rank indicates a lower prevalence. The crude rates of preventable hospitalizations, the chief cause of which is smoking, has fallen from 72.1 to 58.6, indicating better awareness regarding the dangers of smoking, as well as increasing amounts of public health spending.
In the past year the percentage of children in poverty increased from 10.5 percent to 15.9 percent.
The strong points of the state are low rates of smoking and obesity as well as low rates of preventable hospitalizations.
CPR, First Aid and BLS (Basic Life Support) is a critical qualification for EMTs, RNs and other medical professionals in Hawaii. CPR Select provides online classes and certification programs for medical professionals who wish to become certified.
