Houston is a major city located in Texas and is the 24th most populated city in the United States. With a racially and ethnically diverse population, the city faces numerous health disparities. The rate of adult obesity is 34%, giving Houston the unfortunate title of "the fattest city in the nation." This percentage has been increasing rapidly over the last decade. There are also approximately 34% of adolescents, grades 9-12, that are considered obese. In addition to obesity, Houston is also facing a high percentage of adults with diabetes, with approximately 13.5% of the population considered diabetic. One possible explanation for the high prevalence of obesity and diabetes is that Houston has the highest availability of "junk food" compared to other cities in the U.S.
Given the high rate of obesity and diabetes, it is essential that medical professionals be certified in CPR, First Aid and BLS (Basic Life Support). These are critical qualifications for EMTs, RNs and other medical professionals that will not only provide job-specific training, but also help to educate the medical community on the various health issues Houston residents are facing. "CPR Select" provides flexible, quality online training programs for Houston medical professionals wishing to certify or recertify.
The Methodist Hospital System is the top-rated healthcare system in Texas and is comprised of 5 hospitals and 2 emergency care centers. Founded in 1919, this 899-bed hospital system specializes in stroke care, orthopedics, transplants, cancer, diabetes and medical research. Other notable Houston hospitals include St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Houston is nicknamed "Space City" because it is home to NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. The city has a population of over 2.1 million in 6,278 square miles. Incorporated in 1837, Houston is the fourth-most populous city in the U.S. In the 1900s, the discovery of oil created a new industry and boosted the economy of Houston, while the oil boom in the 1920s served to drastically increase Houston's population. World War II also benefited the city with increased shipbuilding. The weather in Houston is mild in the winter and hot and humid in the summer, with temperatures often topping 90 degrees. The city has a high prevalence of thunderstorms and tornados in the spring.
The city's economy is largely comprised of energy (oil and natural gas), renewable energy (wind and solar), oilfield equipment manufacturing, aeronautics and biomedical research. Houston is also considered the best city for shopping, according to Fortune Magazine.
Houston hosts many annual events including the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Pride Parade and the Houston Greek Festival. The city also has a theatre district that includes many venues, notably the Houston Symphony Orchestra and Houston Grand Opera. Popular museums, such as the Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of Natural Sciences, also draw many visitors each year, as does the Houston Space Center and Downtown Aquarium.
