According to www.americashealthrankings.org, Illinois was ranked 30th in overall health in 2012 and has remained relatively stable over the last 5 years. The life expectancy is 78.7 years, which on par with the national average.
When it comes to healthcare spending, Illinois is ranked 30th, spending approximately $15.4 billion in healthcare. The state is ranked 31st in insurance, with 14.8% of the population living without insurance. This number has remained relatively stable over the past decade. The availability of primary care physicians is one of the highest ranked in the nation (11th), with approximately 130 PCPs per 100,000 residents, which is notably higher than the national average of 121.
Approximately 12.6% of adults in Illinois are living below poverty level. The percentage of children living in poverty is 19.6%, ranking Illinois 21st in the country in this category. Since 2000, the rate of adults living in poverty has increased 2%, while the rate of children has increased significantly by almost 5% in just the last 5 years.
Due to a very high prevalence for sedentary lifestyle, approximately 2.7 million adults in Illinois (or 27.1%) are obese, ranking the state 21st in adult obesity. This number has been relatively stable in the past 5 years. With a ranking of 20th, Illinois also has a moderately low percentage of obesity among children with 11.6% of the adolescent population considered obese. Taking into account the percentage of obese individuals, it is no surprise that 9.7% of adults in Illinois are living with diabetes, ranking it 28th in the country. This number has been increasing over the last decade, up from 6.6% in 2002. The incidence of stroke is approximately 3.1%, which is appreciably higher than the national average of 2.1%.
With a moderately low prevalence of smoking, only 20.9% of the population, Illinois has the 22nd lowest ranking in the country, however, the percentage of people who smoke has increased by 4% since 2011. Illinois is ranked 47th in binge drinking, one of the poorest-ranked states, with 23% of the population participating in binge drinking. This number shows a more than 4% increase in just two years.
With the strengths being high prevalence of primary care physicians available, Illinois is still struggling with a very high prevalence for binge drinking and a moderately high prevalence of stroke and lack of insurance.
