According to www.americashealthrankings.org, Texas was ranked 40th in overall health in 2012 and has remained relatively stable in the past decade. The life expectancy is 78.27 years, which is standard, compared to a national average of 78.7 years.
When it comes to healthcare spending, Texas is ranked 38th and notably one of the worst states in the nation in per capita public health funding. Texas is also the poorest-ranked state in insurance. The number of people living without insurance has decreased slightly over the past year however, 24.2% of the population is still uninsured. The availability of primary care physicians in Texas is also poorly ranked at 43rd, averaging out to only approximately 95 PCPs per 100,000 residents, significantly lower than the national average of 121.
Approximately 16.8% of adults in Texas are living below poverty level. The percentage of children living in poverty is 25.5%, ranking Texas 47th in the country in this category. Over the past decade, the rate of adults living in poverty has increased 1.4% while the rate of children has remained relatively stable.
Due to a high prevalence for sedentary lifestyle, Texas is ranked 40th in the country in obesity, with over 30% of adults (approximately 5.7 million people) considered obese. With a ranking of 38th, Texas also has a high percentage of obese children (15.6%). Considering the percentage of obese individuals, it is no surprise that 10.2% of adults in Texas are living with diabetes, ranking it 33rd in the country. Although the ranking has remained consistent over the last five years, trending suggests the number of people with diabetes is expected to rise significantly over the next several years. The incidence of stroke is approximately 2.7%, which is slightly higher than the national average of 2.1%.
With a relatively low prevalence of smoking, only 19.2% of the population smokes, ranking Texas the 14thlowest in the country. Statistics indicate that 18.9% of the population participates in binge drinking, giving Texas a ranking of 31st, which, although not extremely high, indicates an almost 5% increase since last year alone.
With the strengths being low prevalence for smoking and cancer-related deaths, Texas is still struggling with a high prevalence for obesity, diabetes, poverty and lack of insurance.
